The world will not come to an end if you don’t get this job.
I know you’re desperate. But no matter how hard you try, there can be no guarantees.
So, ‘Expect the best, prepare for the worst.’ If you don’t get the job, you don’t get the job. Simple as that.
Of course, this job is important to you, that’s why you appear for the interview. But getting desperate will not help. Desperation increases your stress levels and affects your performance.
You start losing confidence.
You get nervous.
Your mouth dries up.
Your legs start shaking.
And all this happens during the interview – when you’re supposed to answer the questions. And guess what, you’re not focused.
You’re busy thinking, “What would happen if I don’t get this job?” Relax! Nothing would happen.
I recall failing in voice audition for All India Radio’s Fm channel three times.
Yes, I failed thrice. And one of the core reasons why I failed was that I was desperate.
What can you do not to get desperate? Just relax and face the interview. Say to yourself, “If I get this job, it’s cool. But if I don’t, that’s cool, too.”
Focus on the ‘Process’ of Preparing for the Interview
You can only work on things you have control over.
Do you have control over the result of the interview?
Can you influence or manipulate your way up to the job?
No. But you have control over how you prepare yourself for it. So, focus on the process.
- Polish your communication skills and spoken English.
- Work on your dressing sense.
- Practice answering the common questions asked in interviews.
Keep practising. Keep polishing.
If the process you need to go through to pass the interview is nearly perfect, there’s a high probability you’ll come out of that cabin with a big smile.
When it comes to answering questions in interviews, honesty is still the best policy.
The people interviewing you are professionals, and you can’t fool them. They know when you lie.
If they ask you a question and you don’t know the answer, say ‘I don’t know.’ This approach may work far better than pretending you know the answer. Integrity is one of the core values employers want in their employees.
Assess Your Self-Worth
“Why do you think you’re the right person for this job?”
It is one of the most common and also the toughest questions to answer.
But it’s not a trap as many people think. Instead, it’s a way for the employer to assess your self-worth.
An employer would not want to hire someone who sees himself in low light. High self-worth is something that makes a candidate stand out from the crowd.
If you’re convinced enough about your calibre to be the right person for the job, it’ll reflect in your body language and the way you handle such questions.
An excellent way to increase your self-worth would be to list down all the qualities that make you the right candidate. Writing things down not only clears your head but also makes you realise how talented you are.
There’s Always Hope (And Always a Better Job)
If you get the job, great! If not, that’s OK too. Like I said in the beginning, don’t be desperate.
Life doesn’t end on a job. Even if you fail at something doesn’t mean you’re not worthy. It just says that life has something more significant for you in store.
As they say, “Ram Ji shuts one door only when he opens another door first.” But we get so desperate to pass through the closed door that we keep banging our head on it instead of finding the open door.
Open your eyes. Figure out where could you use your talent next. And when you do figure out, go for that.
Not succeeding in an interview can blow your self-esteem, if you allow. Don’t let an unsuccessful job interview make you feel like a loser.
There are plenty of jobs out there. You need to train yourself to find another one and do your best.
